Carlos T. 'Carl' Atkins

Carlos T. “Carl” Atkins, 84, Gallipolis, Ohio went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, August 25, 2012 at the Holzer Senior Care Center. Carl was born on October 6, 1927 in Van, West Virginia, son of the late Toral L. and Edith M. Brown Atkins. He was a retired claims adjuster for Nationwide Insurance. Carl was a member of First Baptist Church in Gallipolis, a World War II U.S. Army veteran, member of the V.F.W. Post 4464, AMVETS Post #23, DAV Post #141, a Kentucky Colonel, and a past member of the Masonic Lodge. He was a 1945 graduate of Sherman High School in Seth, West Virginia. Carl was married to Eleanor L. Miller Atkins whom he married on September 10, 1948 in Charleston, WV and she survives in Gallipolis, along with two daughters, Sharon (David) Rees, Lisa (Keith) Jeffers both of Gallipolis, and one son Greg (Lorna) Atkins of Gallipolis, grandchildren, Dax, Dusty, Amber, Jeremy, Carly, Stephen, Seth, Sarah, Grace, David, Danny, Jeff and Joe; 14 Great Grandchildren, and a special friend Steve Slone. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son-in-law Mike Wolfe, and a brother James E. Atkins. Carl was a living example of how the Bible instructs us to live. Carl enjoyed his family and friends and he loved cookouts. He loved to sing around the piano with his family and there were many friends who enjoyed singing in church quartets with him. Woodworking and fishing were two of his favorite hobbies. He was always a faithful, familiar face at sporting events for Ohio Valley Christian School and Gallia Academy High School. You could always pick him out in the crowd cheering on his children and grandchildren. Funeral services will be 11 am Thursday, August 30, 2012 at Willis Funeral Home with Pastor Alvis Pollard officiating. Burial will follow in the Centenary Cemetery. Friends may call on Wednesday, August 29, 2012 from 6-8 pm at Willis Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Dax Hill, Dusty Hill, Jeremy Wolfe, Stephen Atkins, Seth Atkins and Brady Hill. Full military honors will be given at the graveside by members of the Gallia County Funeral Detail.
