E. Richard “Rich” Mahan was born November 20, 1945, at Patriot, Ohio. He passed away on Monday, March 30, 2026. Rich was the son of the late Edgar and Mabel Allbright Mahan.
He married Shirley Ann Thorndyke on June 22, 1968, at Camp Pendleton, California. Shirley preceded Rich in death on June 3, 2020. In addition to his wife, Rich was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Crews and Edna Tawney, and brothers-in-law, Bobby Crews and Lawrence Tawney.
Rich is survived by two sons, Samuel of Gallipolis and Earl and wife Venus of San Diego, California; nephew Mike Tawney and niece Lisa Tawney (Clark) both of Gallipolis; several great nephews, and great nieces; and very special friends, Eric, Wendy, Cody (Taylor) and Colton Russell.
Rich graduated from Southwestern High School and attended Rio Grande College. He received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Redlands, Redlands, California. He did post graduate work in psychology and real estate.
Rich served in the United States Marine Corps, serving in various duty stations stateside as well as Vietnam and Japan. After leaving the Marine Corps, Rich entered the banking industry. In 2014, Rich retired from his banking career after nearly 40 years in the industry. Rich was a lifetime member of VFW Post 4464 and a member of Faith Baptist Church.
The funeral service for Rich will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 3, 2026, at Willis Funeral Home with Pastor Nathan Wood officiating. Burial will follow in Ohio Valley Memory Gardens. Military honors will be presented by the Gallia County Honor Guard at the Chapel of Hope in Ohio Valley Memory Gardens. Pallbearers will be Mike Tawney, Eric Russell, Cody Russell, Colton Russell, Alex Tawney, and Darren Clark. Rich's family gives thanks for the care he has received from Dr. Michael Owens and Dr. Joseph Esmaeili.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Rich’s name to Gideons International, P.O. Box 1104, Gallipolis, Ohio 45631.
