John W. Janes

John W. Janes of Reynoldsburg, Ohio passed away on November 22, 2014 at the age of 96. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Charlie Janes, and his two brothers, William Janes, Sr. and Charles L. (“Jerry”) Janes. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Jo Ann (“Jody”), their two children, Charles R. (Linda) Janes, Columbus, and Kathy (Kevin) Flatau, Alexandria, MN, two grandchildren (Erica & Jessica), and several nieces and nephews. John was born in Gallipolis, Ohio on August 26, 1918. He grew up playing basketball and tennis for Gallia Academy high school. He excelled at tennis and later in life he was honoured in the school’s Hall of Fame. He attended the Ohio State University in the 1930’s and lettered multi-years in tennis. John served in World War II and was stationed in Australia & the Philippines among other posts. John worked in sales and management for the Kendall Company for 37 years before retiring in 1983. John was active in the community and especially with the Reynoldsburg United Methodist Church and the Reynoldsburg Senior Center. John & Jody were devoted Buckeye fans and enjoyed games “at the shoe” as season ticket holders for many years. John loved to play golf and later in life was an avid painter. He was a passionate gardener and especially loved to share the bounty of his many tomatoes plants. For years he was the author of the “Seniors on the Move” column in the Reynoldsburg newspaper. He always had a smile on his face, a hand to shake, and left his ever-present optimism and encouragement to his family and many others. A visitation will be held at 2pm with a service to follow at 3pm on Monday, Dec. 1st at the United Methodist Church, 1636 Graham Rd. Reynoldsburg, OH. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to The Gallia County OH Historical Society or The American Heart Association in John’s memory.
