Mary Ann Walker McGuire, 90, passed away on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at Holzer Medical Center. She was born on September 10, 1934, to Floyd and Freda Walker. She graduated from Jackson High School in 1952, then married her high school sweetheart, Gene McGuire, on March 27, 1953. To this union were born three children: Leesa (Stan) York, Keith (Janet) McGuire, and Angela (Dwayne) Houck. Other family members who survive and will continue to carry her memory include her grandchildren: Jenna York, Coleen (Justin) Steinhaus, Andrea (Christopher) Davis, Rebecca (Jeremy) Brumfield, Brianna McGuire, and Braden McGuire. Also surviving are two great-grandchildren (Cambria and Torin Steinhaus); her sister-in-law, Betty Walker; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Preceding Mary Ann in death were her parents, Floyd and Freda Brown Walker; her husband, Gene McGuire; and her brother, Mickey Walker.
Trained in the nursing field, Mary Ann worked in medical offices in both Jackson and Gallipolis. She retired in 1996 from the Senior Citizens Center, part of the Gallia County Area Agency on Aging, where she was Assistant Director and coordinated Passport services. After her retirement, she began her most cherished role as babysitter for her grandchildren. The cousins always had fun with Grandma, also known as Gunny, playing outside, making crafts, taking walks, or visiting the library.
Music was always a big part of Mary Ann’s life. She began playing the organ in church at the age of 14 and continued playing for many years after. Gene and she sang regularly for many occasions at church and spread their love of music to their children and grandchildren.
Everyone was always welcome at Mary Ann and Gene’s house, and they cared for their children’s friends as if they were their own. They did everything from providing “track juice” to the track team, to providing dinner for college students who couldn’t go home for holidays, to providing a place for a group to practice their band instruments. Everyone had a place in their home.
Mary Ann loved having the whole family together, but some of the best times were pizza and game nights where she always came up with the best Scattergories answers!
Mary Ann exemplified the spirit of generosity in her actions, smile, words, and service to others. Even in her final moments, she was on her way to serve the Lord and show His love at Court Street Ministries. We know she will joyfully serve the Lord into eternity, just as she did on earth. She will be remembered as being sharp, sweet, sassy, and full of love; and that love was reciprocated by many.
Services will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 19, 2025 at River of Life Methodist Church with Pastor Larry Fisher officiating. Friends and family may call Saturday prior to the service from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at the church.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to Court Street Ministries at 33 Court Street, Gallipolis, OH 45631.
