Shirley Ilene Neubauer Saunders

Shirley Ilene Neubauer Saunders, 92, of Gallipolis, Ohio passed away on Saturday, December 19, 2015 at her residence. Shirley was born on May 9, 1923 in Detroit, Michigan daughter of the late Helen E. and John T. Neubauer. She was a member of Faith Baptist Church and was especially proud to have served during World War II in the U.S. Army WAC’s from December 27, 1943 to December 4, 1945. Shirley was married to Hayward C. Saunders, on October 12, 1946 in Ecorse, Michigan and he preceded her in death on August 5, 2001. During their marriage, they resided in Michigan, Florida, and the last twenty years in Gallia County. She and Hayward were fortunate to have traveled all over the world during their nearly 55 years of marriage. Shirley is survived by Sisters-in-laws, Wanda (Cleeland) Willis and Joy (Bob) Spencer both of Gallipolis, Brothers-in-law Harold Saunders of Gallipolis and Haskell Saunders of Bidwell and several nieces and nephews. Shirley was also preceded in death by her mother-in-law and father-in-law Ruby and Heber Saunders, sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Janice Saunders, Ivy Saunders, Thelma and Richard Slone. Services will be 7 pm Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at Willis Funeral Home with Pastor Jim Lusher officiating. Visiting hours will be from 5 pm until the time of services on Wednesday. Her burial will be in Providence Cemetery at 11 a.m., Thursday, December 24, 2015. Military honors will be provided by the Gallia County Funeral Detail.
