James Lorten Warren

James Lorten Warren “Bo”, Gallipolis, passed away on December 29, 2005 in the presence of his immediate family. He was in his seventy second year and had valiantly battled lung cancer for more than two years. James was born on September 21, 1933 in Gallia County Ohio Twp, the youngest child of Wye Wakefield and Garnet L. Waugh Warren. His parents preceded him in death in 1994 and 1988 respectively. A stepfather, Erie Phillips, also preceded him in death in 1983. James married Nancy Frances Drummond, daughter of the late Harry Clifford and Murlie Selesta Johnson Drummond, on July 28, 1956 at Gallipolis and she survives. Also, three sons survive: James Calvin Carol Bosworth Warren, David Eugene Othello Harrison Warren, and Jerry Allen Warren all from the lower part of the county. Four grandchildren survive: Angela Matthew Angel, S.J. Warren, Robyn Warren and Ketisha Barry Pierson and their daughter Haley great grandchild of Leon, West Virginia. Two step grandchildren survive: Sara Siders of Dayton and Rachel Angel as well as a step great grandchild Madison. Three siblings survive: Mabel Leota McQuaid, Alfred Lee Warren and Robert Sheldon Warren all of Gallipolis. There are several nieces and nephews. James retired from the highway construction business after five decades of service starting as an Operating Engineer for V.N. Holderman Construction of Columbus, Hi-Way Paving of Columbus and Charleston Construction. Later, he served as Superintendent of Ho-Lam and Hodges Concrete Paving of Dunbar. He was a member of Operating Engineer Local 18 out of Columbus, Ohio and West Virginia Labors Local 1353 out of Charleston. After retirement, he worked a short time for John Amos Power Plant before experiencing declining health. He was a weekend tobacco farmer for more than four decades. A talented self taught guitarist and vocalist of faithful hymns, James often performed in the privacy of his home and occasionally in local Baptist churches. He also had a fondness for The Great Smokey Mountains National Park and earlier in life the Buckeye Lake Region of Ohio. Recently, he enjoyed raising produce on his farm and selling produce in front of his home near Eureka, at Pine Street in Gallipolis and at the Farmer’s Market in Huntington where he was a member of the Cabell County Tailgate Farmers’ Market Association. He especially enjoyed camping at the Gallia County Fairgrounds while supporting his grandchildren’s 4-H endeavors through the years. James was a member of Victory Baptist Church. He was baptized at Victory Baptist Church on April 24, 2004. Family and friends may gather at the Willis Funeral Home of Gallipolis for visitation between 6 and 8 p.m. on Sunday, January 1, 2006. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 2, 2006 at the Willis Funeral Home with Reverend Larry Drummond officiating. Interment will follow at Rome-Proctorville Cemetery sec.3 in Lawrence County. Serving as pallbearers are S.J. Warren, Matthew Angel, Michael Angel, Jason Harris, Dan Loveday and Barry Pierson.
